Trudeau congratulates London Mayor Sadiq Khan on re-election

Justin Trudeau’s relationship with Mayor of London Sadiq Khan continues to blossom.

The prime minister said he spoke with Khan on Wednesday to congratulate the Labour Party politician on his recent election victory.

Khan, who has been mayor of the city since 2016, won just under 44 per cent of the vote on May 2, though only about 40 per cent of the electorate turned out.

Trudeau’s office said the PM and Khan “underscored their mutual commitment to improving the lives of people on both sides of the Atlantic” during their conversation.

“They discussed efforts to address shared priorities, including tackling climate change, combatting [sic] misinformation and disinformation, and promoting diversity and inclusion, particularly amid the disturbing rise in antisemitism and Islamophobia being felt across the world,” Trudeau’s media team said.

“Prime Minister Trudeau and Mayor Khan agreed to remain in contact and looked forward to opportunities to continue their strong collaboration.”

The duo have been chummy since at least 2016, when they mocked Donald Trump, then a candidate in the US presidential election, in Montreal together.

In 2018, Khan branded Trudeau a “leading feminist” and the two leaders were photographed embracing one another.

The prime minister’s office, though it has published statements about Khan, Ukraine, Europe Day, National Nursing Week and other topics, is yet to respond to NowMedia’s questions about the dire state of local journalism in Canada.
